INVESTED IN THE JOURNEY
A Discussion With Dean Guise, CEO & Founder of Hemp Hydrate.
Sometimes in life, chaos can lead to clarity, adversity can breed advantage, and unexpected obstacles can steer us toward a positive path less taken.
For Dean Guise, an experienced investment banker who was an early dabbler in the cannabis sector, it was business as usual until his 14-year-old son, one of the top amateur golfers in Canada, began experiencing severe physical tics, and was later diagnosed with a host of mental health issues, including anxiety, OCD, and depression.
Dean immediately hit the books, bolstering his existing understanding of cannabis with lengthy research on the history, uses, and medicinal potential of these ancient plants.
He spoke with professors, researchers, scientists, and colleagues until coming to the conclusion that hemp was an area worth exploring.
It wasn’t long after, in 2017, that Dean championed the development of a premium purified water infused with hemp extract that would serve as the first product for Hemp Hydrate.
Here, we talk to the CEO and Founder on how he became bullish on Hemp Hydrate and his trust in plants.
Can you discuss your involvement in the cannabis sector prior to Hemp Hydrate?
Before Hemp Hydrate, I was pretty much just in the investment game. I was doing a lot of investing in different companies and learning more and more about the medicinal qualities of the different plants. You knew cannabis was hot because it went from “pot stocks” being the craze to “medical marijuana” and now it’s CBD. I took a step back and could just see that this plant was going to change a lot of things in a lot of people’s lives.
What would you say is the Hemp Hydrate mission?
“Trust in Plants”. We believe in the healing power of hemp. We started with water because it is the most consumed product in the world, and I figured, if we can get hemp-infused water to taste crisp, clean, and natural, and offer it at a good price —it’ll be a home run.
What kind of impact do you hope Hemp Hydrate products to have?
Hemp Hydrate is super versatile. It’s great for an active lifestyle and hydration is key to any level of fitness and training. My goal has always been to offer a high quality product at an affordable price.
You started Hemp Hydrate for very personal reasons, do you think you’ll connect the brand in more formal ways to that personal experience?
Mental health is an issue that’s very dear to my heart, it’s the reason that I’m doing this. That’s why we want to be the first hemp company to embrace the 1-1-1 model of integrated corporate philanthropy, in which a company gives back 1% of its equity, 1% of its revenue, and 1% of its employees’ time to a charitable cause. And our cause will certainly be related to mental health awareness and treatment.
How would you characterize the Hemp Hydrate culture?
It’s been a journey, and it’s been a very cool journey. I one hundred percent know that hemp is the next trillion-dollar market, and we’re in a good position, we have amazing partnerships. But when it’s all said and done, what I’m most proud of is the team we put together and how we’re going to help people. Everybody’s led naturally from one to another, and we have some really special, seasoned individuals that we’re grateful to have in our inner circle. It’s hard to come by, but everybody wants to work with everybody every day and that doesn’t happen very often. It’s not just fun, it’s like a family.
